Project overview

Council is planning to create a small community garden within the Ovingham Pocket Park to help strengthen community connections and increase the community’s use of the reserve.

The proposed garden will be a modest, practical and accessible space where residents can grow food, share skills, and get involved in gardening activities close to home.

A community garden within Ovingham Pocket Park to support local food growing, sustainability and community connection.

Council has identified a preferred location based on site suitability, access, visibility and park function.

Residents can provide feedback on the preferred location, but the focus is on design, access, management and operation.

Final delivery is subject to Council decision-making, budget, design and site considerations.

Some activity is expected, but the design and operating model will consider nearby residents.

Clear operating rules and maintenance responsibilities will be established to manage amenity impacts.

Composting may be considered if it can be safely and effectively managed.

Features may include garden beds, paths, seating, shade, water, composting, storage, signage and planting.

This is yet to be decided. The community garden may include individual plots, shared beds or a hybrid model.

Churchill Greening is a volunteer-led community group driving the vision for the Ovingham Pocket Park, with support from Sustainable Communities SA. The group is actively involved in shaping the community garden design, working closely with local residents and the City of Prospect to reflect community needs and preferences.

Council will retain oversight, with potential day-to-day support from the Churchill Greening community garden group or volunteers.

The garden is intended to primarily serve the local community, with walking and cycling encouraged.

Council does not plan to remove any trees as part of this project.

Yes. Council is interested in understanding the level of local interest in volunteering or joining the community group.

The garden will use part of the park, while retaining the broader public open-space function.

This has not been decided. Council is seeking feedback on access, safety and security.

The garden is intended for community benefit in collaboration with the Churchill Greening Group.

Not all feedback can be adopted. Council must balance community views with budget, safety and site constraints.
